A Myriad of Mushrooms

The other day I went for a hike on the trails near Mt. Finlayson and Jakle's lagoon, and as I walked downhill through the woods I couldn't believe how many mushrooms lined the trail. It was almost like something out of a dream, as there were so many of them in all shapes and sizes. I counted easily over 30 species of mushroom, and have been back several times since then with my camera. Here is just a small sampling of what I've seen there....

Black elfin saddle, Helvella lacunosa
Probably candy cap, Lactarius spp.
Pholiota spp.
One of my favorites. Never seen anything like it before - does anyone have any identification ideas?
Shaggy mane, Coprinus comatus

What great images. I'm fascinated by all the different types of mushrooms I've seen here and on other blogs recently.

Shaggy mane = shaggy inkcap, aka lawyers wig over here. Good eating before they turn black inside.

Be careful of those goats when wandering the hills!

Cheers

Lois - The variety is indeed amazing

Dave - Lawyers wig, I like it! Am I missing something about the goats?

Vera - I like that first one a lot too. It's definitely one of the weirdest ones I've seen.

Warren - I wouldn't know either! So many of the edible species look suspiciously like poisonous species, so I would want to be with an expert before I tried any.
