They deserve our respect and protection and you are one of those guardians at the forefront of that. If there is any way I can be of service please ask. My best email is Assist4u2day@yahoo.com. You should totally write to them and suggest they view Artifishal. I'm probably not up on the latest literature myself so please do send some my way at monika.wieland (at) gmail.com! You know you can get a copy of my book here right? ;) https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781733693400?aff=OrcaWatcher

Rabbits' Guy - What exactly have you heard those big foundations are leery of funding? Salmon recovery? I haven't heard that but it doesn't completely surprise me. It's such a key regional issue though that it seems like someone would step forward to fund a well thought out plan. The question is who? Sounds like you might know the players better than I do!

Our BOLD group is an unofficial alliance of four of us citizens who have been closely following the task force process and working together to debrief it to be easier to understand and encourage public engagement. We ranked each recommendation on a green/yellow/red scale independently of the task force; I actually didn't know they were undergoing the same process until I saw the packet of information for yesterday's meeting. They used a similar green/yellow/red/purple scale, but their items were scored by their working groups for each topic, while the BOLD scorecard was scored by the four of us.

There is a very poorly advertised education and outreach subcommitee of the task force, and that's where educators would plug in I imagine. I'm pretty sure there are not any educators on the task force, at least not people who are primarily educators. I haven't heard of anything from the task force being plugged into curriculums at all.Monikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10442975942250078450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-59475280535384996072019-06-04T08:38:35.119-07:002019-06-04T08:38:35.119-07:00Thanks much for taking the notes and summarizing t...Thanks much for taking the notes and summarizing them and hitting key points. So many of us see the overwhelming cost estimates for "saving the Salish Sea" and what lives there and then also see what is available to spend and wonder "how?" Will be interesting to see how that need for more and regular, consistent money plays out. I have heard more than once that the BIG foundations and DEEP pockets are leery of getting too involved because they do not think it will ever work. Easier to cure malaria. Have others heard such?

I was confused if team BOLD is a different score keeping system than what the Task Force uses? Your team BOLD report seems very "official" and kudos for doing it - a big job there.

Lastly, do you know if education people are represented on the Task Force? Seems like the State Ed. apparatus gets involved in lots of Salish Sea curriculum but I wonder how coordinated that is with the Task Force efforts and aims.
RGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02017190779860810318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-28710138438648697412019-06-04T07:10:36.699-07:002019-06-04T07:10:36.699-07:00Hi Monika, thanks again for taking the trouble to ...Hi Monika, thanks again for taking the trouble to give such a thorough report on such a maddeningly bureaucratic process.
One topic that deserves more scrutiny from the task force is hatchery production. There's an overwhelming body of peer-reviewed scientific papers that provide all the evidence any rational mind could ever need to realize hatcheries are a detriment to salmon recovery. I can point you to the literature if you're interested. The task force should be invited to a screening of Patagonia's latest film, Artifishal, which provides a succinct critique of hatchery operations. Also, I need a copy of your book! Thanks again for doing this.
SteveKatmandoohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08415885056857254552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-59765185026477646632019-04-10T14:15:26.036-07:002019-04-10T14:15:26.036-07:00Your report is wonderful, Monika! It's nice ...Good article! On point, ha ha ha!

It's nice to know a point is a point, and counted as such, whether it's on the right or on the left, by a consensus of reasonable people, if it is in fact a point worth counting.

And we should, I think accept the same language in definition, to avoid all confusion.

But as noted, some people like to have the market on how points are counted, or at least to propagate their own invention, (in superiority?), if not to actually change the most common understanding on total of points. (as on the west coast)

Advocating for a definition to become most commonly understood of embracing all points on the antlers as belonging to one pair, on one head, would be most beneficial to all, I think.

It is surprising how many articles actually don't actually get to that point, somewhere near the onset, in this question of what is meant from a regional perspective when a point number is spoken of.

Since it is an interesting topic, and the variance quite widespread in the minds of people who do not hunt, or track with the dialogue, and, I have read several articles today, yours is the most informative and again I say, "on point"!Dave Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11601511658771894560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-71714952347743392272018-11-12T10:30:04.704-08:002018-11-12T10:30:04.704-08:00I loved the tribute to all 5 (Rhapsody and baby) M...I loved the tribute to all 5 (Rhapsody and baby) My greatest wish is that you won't have to do these anymore! It is terribly emotional to read these, not because they died of natural causes BUT because we HUMANS did this to them and continue to do this to them because of our greediness and lack of empathy for their species...honestly, one of the reasons I moved to WA in 2001 is because I fell in love with "Ruffles" and wanted to see him and learn more about these pods and I would never imagine they may die off in my lifetime because of us.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13458295117806842249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-39560231256542808052018-11-07T04:44:22.698-08:002018-11-07T04:44:22.698-08:00Beautifully writtenBeautifully writtenAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02289052648584991781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3970777878498844654.post-4823294540829102802018-11-03T21:47:53.126-07:002018-11-03T21:47:53.126-07:00Lots of backpedalling to do now. A good start would be the resurrection of spawning streams and rivers that have been ignorantly forgotten.
Another would be to convert to non toxic cleaning products, they're available, but most aren't aware.
Addressing microplastics entering the marine ecosystem is another.
We've got scientific knowledge that didn't exist in the past.
